I have to remind myself that holidays are a good thing. It’s a bone of contention with my wife because she really appreciates a holiday and I sometimes see them as an interruption, even an indulgence.
I’m grateful that we are able to have them and I always (more or less) enjoy them but I have one of those brains that notices umpteen things that need doing and enjoys the dopamine hit of ticking them off a list. It makes it sound like I’m really productive but most of the things are minor domestic jobs that make for a nice environment but hardly progress things.
So my thinking goes ‘what can I usefully be doing on holiday?’
Well if I’m intentional, and show myself some compassion, I know that I get to:
Change environment (big one for me)
Change routine (also much needed)
Read
Reflect
Step off the treadmill
Spend time with family
Recharge
And when I get home I’m excited to be back in the saddle and cracking on with work.
Plus I know the holidays that work for me are when I still get to enjoy making a meal, doing the washing and all the other little chores I can feed my reward system with.
